What Ayurveda permits During Monsoon (Varsha Ritu)

According to Ayurveda The monsoon period falls In Uttrayan (Nothern Solstice) and during this phase general body strength is already weak. For that I would suggest one must follow the diet and Lifestyles which is largely explained in various texts of Ayurveda; which we consider is mandatory to follow to attain good health.
Already less digestive fire gets more weaken due to the environmental conditions in this period.
Already Less Digestive fire leads to disturb  all the three Doshas  viz. Vata, Pitta and Kafa in body which indeed is responsible for many diseases to occur.
The Food and Lifestyle should thus be such which helps in balancing Vata, Pitta and Kafa.

Diet in Monsoon

  • Consume lights and freshly prepared food like barley, rice, wheat etc
  • Avoid Junk food
  • It is very important to add Cow's pure Ghrut (Ghee) in your diet
  • Try to cook food in cow's ghee
  • As mentioned in Ayurveda's Charak Samhita - adding ginger in food is very much beneficial. It helps in balancing all the three doshas in body,
  • Consume the Decoction prepared with few Ayurveda drugs viz. Chavya (Piper retrofractum), Chitrak (Plumbato zeylanica),  Pipali (Piper longum), Pipali Mool(Piper Longum), Sonth( Zingiber officinale) twice a day during this period to ignite the digestive fire safely.
  • Have some soups made up of sour and salty vegetables.
  • Chose to eat freshly cooked foods over uncooked and junk foods.
  • Avoid green leafy vegetable because they are not seasonal
  • Avoid curd, red meat and any other food which takes longer time to  digest
  • Buttermilk in this season is strongly recommended.
Lifestyle in Monsoon
Only taking healthy diet may not provide desire benefits unless supported by healthy lifestyle too. Both goes hand in hand.
  • First of all avoid sleeping during day times as it hampers digestion and slows down the metabolism
  • Avoid over exertion and over exposure to sun - as it cause lot of sweating which may leads to dehydration
  • Drink plenty of fluids like water, fresh fruit juices, coconut water, soups etc
  • Keeping body warm helps you to fight with viruses, as viruses are more active in cold body
  • As the immunity is already very low at this time so avoid getting wet in rain
  • Avoid consuming fried food because they are hard to digest
  • Morning or Evening walk of 30 minutes keeps you and your heart healthy
  • Meditation and Yoga are always good options to adapt in our lifestyle
Try to adapt the mentioned diet and lifestyle in daily routine and you may be surprised at how amazing you feel after making these simple changes in your life.Good Luck!
