Wholesome and Unwholesome (Pathya and Apathya) Food and Lifestyle - Part 1

Ayurveda is not merely a medical science instead I must say that it is a complete science of life. The first and the foremost aim of Ayurveda is to maintain the health of a healthy person so that no diseases should manifest.

To maintain the health of a healthy person Maharishi Charak had described various dos and don’ts such as Ritucharya (seasonal regime), Dinacharya (diurnal regime) etc. The concept of Pathya (wholesome) and Apathaya (unwholesome) is one such concept.

There are certain types of combinations of food which are categorised as adverse combinations in Ayurveda. Charak had elaborately described the concept of Pathya(wholesome)and Apathya(unwholesome). He had given a general list of Pathya (wholesome) and Apathya Dravya(unwholesome) along with specific Pathya(wholesome)and Apathya Dravya (unwholesome).

The main aim to be healthy is to balance and maintain all the three doshas

We shall talk about the Adverse Food combinations and Lifestyle in this article.

Let's talk about the foods first
  • All foods which are sour in nature are adverse with Milk
  • Fruits sour in nature are not at all recommended with milk
  • Kulath Dal (horse gram) is also not recommended with milk.
  • Reddish, carrots etc all salads in raw form also leaves adverse effect with milk.
  • Chicken with curd – a big no
  • Udad daal (black gram) with  reddish
  • Jaggery taken with milk or curd or ghee proves to be fatal most of the time
  • Buttermilk with banana cause severe acidity and gastric trouble
  • Ghee and Honey in equal quantity acts as poison and is fatal, however if the combination is taken in 2:1, then it proves to be a rejuvenator.
  • Honey, Ghee, fat (in any form) and water-if all taken in equal quantity or in the combinations of 2-2 or 3-3 then it cause various health troubles.
  • Honey with Dates are not recommended

In short, if the diet taken is not helping the toxins to come out of the body are considered as adverse foods.

Now let’s talk about the Adverse lifestyle

  • Untimely sleep  leads to over sleep and abstinence from sleep leads to many diseases in body like insomnia, increased level of irritation, gastric troubles, problematic digestion, lowers metabolism etc.
  • Awakened till late night leads to the dryness in skin and intestine and hence is responsible for vata disorders like palpitation, loss of appetite, pain in joints and body, weakness, or even vertigo etc.
  • Sleeping during day time leads to kafaj diseases in body like you becomes more and more lazy, over production of toxins in intestines, metabolism hampered due to kafa, loss of appetite
  • During summers it is strongly recommended in Ayurveda to sleep during day time because of increased vata and pitta in atmosphere and dry small nights.
  • However people who are tired due to over exertion or over physical work, drunk, angry, grieved, afraid, asthmatic or old are advised to sleep for some time during day.\

Some way outs to attain a healthy lifestyle:
  • Meditate every day for tranquility of mind.
  • Observe cleanliness in all things.
  • Be patient
  • Observe self-control.
  • Be straightforward and kind.
  • Avoid irregularity in daily activities.
  • Avoid overeating, over drinking, too much sexual activity, too much or too little sleep..
  • Act always in a courteous and polite manner.
  • Control your sense organs.

A healthy body and a healthy mind leads to healthy and happy life.

What Ayurveda permits During Monsoon (Varsha Ritu)

According to Ayurveda The monsoon period falls In Uttrayan (Nothern Solstice) and during this phase general body strength is already weak. For that I would suggest one must follow the diet and Lifestyles which is largely explained in various texts of Ayurveda; which we consider is mandatory to follow to attain good health.
Already less digestive fire gets more weaken due to the environmental conditions in this period.
Already Less Digestive fire leads to disturb  all the three Doshas  viz. Vata, Pitta and Kafa in body which indeed is responsible for many diseases to occur.
The Food and Lifestyle should thus be such which helps in balancing Vata, Pitta and Kafa.

Diet in Monsoon

  • Consume lights and freshly prepared food like barley, rice, wheat etc
  • Avoid Junk food
  • It is very important to add Cow's pure Ghrut (Ghee) in your diet
  • Try to cook food in cow's ghee
  • As mentioned in Ayurveda's Charak Samhita - adding ginger in food is very much beneficial. It helps in balancing all the three doshas in body,
  • Consume the Decoction prepared with few Ayurveda drugs viz. Chavya (Piper retrofractum), Chitrak (Plumbato zeylanica),  Pipali (Piper longum), Pipali Mool(Piper Longum), Sonth( Zingiber officinale) twice a day during this period to ignite the digestive fire safely.
  • Have some soups made up of sour and salty vegetables.
  • Chose to eat freshly cooked foods over uncooked and junk foods.
  • Avoid green leafy vegetable because they are not seasonal
  • Avoid curd, red meat and any other food which takes longer time to  digest
  • Buttermilk in this season is strongly recommended.
Lifestyle in Monsoon
Only taking healthy diet may not provide desire benefits unless supported by healthy lifestyle too. Both goes hand in hand.
  • First of all avoid sleeping during day times as it hampers digestion and slows down the metabolism
  • Avoid over exertion and over exposure to sun - as it cause lot of sweating which may leads to dehydration
  • Drink plenty of fluids like water, fresh fruit juices, coconut water, soups etc
  • Keeping body warm helps you to fight with viruses, as viruses are more active in cold body
  • As the immunity is already very low at this time so avoid getting wet in rain
  • Avoid consuming fried food because they are hard to digest
  • Morning or Evening walk of 30 minutes keeps you and your heart healthy
  • Meditation and Yoga are always good options to adapt in our lifestyle
Try to adapt the mentioned diet and lifestyle in daily routine and you may be surprised at how amazing you feel after making these simple changes in your life.Good Luck!
